A 19th-century Spanish albarello, hand-painted in deep cobalt blue over a white tin glaze. Traditionally used as an apothecary jar, the piece has the distinctive waisted form associated with albarelli, with a broad opening, gently flared body and strong horizontal banding around the neck.
The decoration is particularly appealing, with a loosely painted architectural garden scene surrounded by stylised foliage. The freer brushwork and slightly uneven cobalt give the piece a very individual character, while the softly aged white glaze provides a beautiful contrast to the darker blue decoration.
A striking decorative piece, it would work especially well displayed on open shelving, in a kitchen or among a collection of antique ceramics.
