An exceptional large French antique brass basin, hand-worked from substantial sheet brass and finished with two rows of punched crescent decoration around the broad rim. Measuring an impressive 69 cm across, it has a rich golden interior, visible hammer marks and a naturally oxidised exterior in layered green, blue and brown tones.
Believed to date from the late 19th or early 20th century, the basin was probably made as a practical household vessel for washing or another domestic purpose. A circular metal repair at the centre may indicate that the basin originally had a small drainage hole, perhaps once closed with a cork or wooden stopper before being permanently sealed.
Its generous proportions make it a striking decorative piece for an interior. It could be used as a large indoor planter with a suitable liner, a log or textile basket, or a floor-standing bowl filled with branches and seasonal foliage. It also displays beautifully upright, where the hammered surface and repeated crescent border can be fully appreciated.
