An exceptional antique French copper vessel, known as a ferrat, dating from the 18th century. Traditionally made as robust working vessels, ferrats were used in rural France for carrying and measuring, but this example is particularly striking for the amount of decorative detail incorporated into its construction.
The substantial hand-worked copper body has a broad, low form with two angular side handles. Riveted reinforcing straps run vertically down the vessel, each decorated with hand-punched curved motifs, while a corresponding punched border encircles the upper section. The irregular hammering, individually worked rivets, folded seams and uneven rim give a wonderful sense of the piece having been made entirely by hand.
Its surface has developed beautifully over time, with warm reddish-brown copper, areas of darker oxidation and traces of verdigris caught within the decoration. Numerous dents, old repairs and signs of prolonged use remain visible throughout and form an important part of its character.
At 35 cm in diameter, this is a substantial decorative piece with enough presence to stand alone. It would be stunning beside a fireplace filled with logs or kindling, used as a large planter with an internal liner, or simply displayed as an early piece of French provincial copper.

Condition: In good antique condition with extensive age-related wear consistent with its considerable age and original use. There are dents, surface marks, oxidation, areas of verdigris, irregularities to the rim and a number of old repairs and soldered areas. The copper has developed a rich, varied patina throughout. These signs of wear form an important part of the vessel’s character and history.
