Antique French Confit Pot with Green Glaze, 19th Century 9.8"

Antique French Confit Pot with Green Glaze, 19th Century 9.8"

Agotado

A beautiful antique French confit pot with olive green glaze, dating to the late 19th century.

Traditionally used in the south-west of France for preserving duck or goose confit, these utilitarian pottery vessels were designed with a glazed upper section and unglazed lower body. The porous clay base allowed the pot to be partially buried in cool earth or a cellar floor to help keep the contents preserved.

This example features a rich green glaze covering the upper half of the vessel, softly pooling around the rim and handles. The lower portion remains unglazed, revealing the warm natural clay typical of regional French pottery.

The interior is coated in a dark honey-yellow slip, a practical finish used to protect the vessel during storage.

With its generous form and time-worn surface, the pot makes a beautiful decorative piece for the kitchen or interior, equally striking filled with dried flowers, branches, or greenery.
