A charming antique French provincial wooden footstool dating to around 1900, with a wonderfully simple country form and warm, time-worn patina.
Made from solid wood, the stool has a thick rectangular top raised on four curved legs, with a gently scalloped apron running between them. The shaped legs and decorative apron give a subtle nod to traditional Louis XV furniture, interpreted here in a much simpler provincial style.
The surface has developed a rich honey-brown colour through age and use, with visible grain, knocks, marks and softened edges that add to its character. Its small proportions suggest it was originally intended as a repose-pieds or fireside footstool rather than a conventional seat.
A lovely piece of antique French country furniture, equally suited to use as a footstool or as a small decorative stand for books, pottery or other objects.
