19th Century French Oak Tool Box

A substantial 19th century French oak box, beautifully constructed from solid oak with large exposed finger joints and a wonderfully worn surface developed through many years of use.

Dating to the mid to late 19th century, the box has a simple utilitarian form with rounded edges, a thick solid lid and an attractive shaped metal clasp to the front. The oak has developed rich variations in colour, from warm honeyed tones across the sides to deeper brown areas around the edges and base. Scratches, marks and remnants of old surface colour add further character and reflect its working past.

The interior is considerably darker than the exterior and retains evidence of its original construction, including wooden supports which may once have held a removable tray or fitting. The substantial weight and robust joinery suggest that this was made as a practical working or storage box, although its precise original use is unknown.

Today it makes a striking decorative piece for a French country, rustic or collected interior. Its compact proportions make it particularly easy to display on a console table, shelves or desk, while the interior can still be used for storage

Condition:

The box is in good antique condition with wear consistent with its age and former use. There are scratches, knocks, small old holes, areas of discolouration and age-related movement and splits to the timber. The original-style metal clasp and keyhole remain in place, although the locking mechanism is not functional and there is no key.
