Mid-Century French Oil Painting of a Rooster, c.1940s–1960s 17.5" x 18"

A characterful mid-century French oil painting of a rooster, dating from approximately the 1940s to 1960s. The rooster is shown in profile, painted in an expressive palette of muted blue, blue-green, ochre, cream, rust and vivid red.

The work has a distinctive naïve, almost folk-art quality, with loose, energetic brushwork combined with more detailed passages through the plumage. Raised paint and repeated feather-like strokes give the surface considerable texture, particularly across the breast and sweeping blue-grey tail.

Painted on board, the composition is framed by a broad brown-painted margin around the edge of the support and presented in an age-worn moulded wooden frame. The warm tones of the frame complement the earthy ochres and cooler blue tones of the painting particularly well.

An unusual and highly decorative example of French mid-century art, with a subject that works beautifully in a kitchen, dining room, country house interior or more eclectic scheme. The combination of the traditional rooster motif and expressive mid-century handling gives the painting a strong decorative presence.
