A small 19th-century French earthenware pot with a wonderfully characterful green glaze and a warm yellow-green glazed interior.
Wheel-thrown from substantial terracotta, the pot has a low, broad form with a thick rounded rim and an unglazed lower section. The green glaze is richly mottled, ranging from deep emerald to softer grassy tones, with extensive areas of wear revealing the pale earthenware beneath. Inside, traces of yellow and green glaze remain alongside the marks of long use.
This type of robust glazed pottery formed part of the everyday kitchen wares of southern France, used for storing and preparing food. Its compact proportions make this example particularly easy to display, whether used as a small planter, filled with seasonal fruit, or simply placed among a collection of French pottery.
The considerable wear to the glaze gives the pot an especially striking surface, with layers of green, cream and terracotta creating a beautifully aged appearance.
