Antique French Green Glazed Confit Pot, 19th Century 9.5"

A wonderfully timeworn 19th-century French confit pot, with a rich green glaze covering the upper half of the body and two generous loop handles.

Traditionally known in France as a pot à graisse, vessels of this form were used throughout South-West France for preserving foods, particularly meat stored beneath a layer of fat. The lower portion was typically left unglazed, while the interior and upper body were glazed to create a more practical surface.

This example has a particularly decorative, timeworn surface. Over many years of use, areas of the original green glaze have naturally worn away to reveal the pale earthenware beneath, creating the wonderfully mottled finish that gives the pot so much character. Deeper bottle-green glaze remains around the neck and handles, softening to lighter green across the body. The interior is finished with a contrasting pale yellow glaze, similarly softened and worn through age and use.

The pot has the traditional rounded form, broad shoulder and narrow base associated with old French confit pots, together with a pair of high loop handles and a substantial rolled rim. Its relatively compact proportions make it an easy piece to display while still having plenty of presence.

A lovely example of antique French country pottery, particularly suited to a kitchen, shelf or table where its worn green glaze and sculptural form can be appreciated.
