Large Vintage Painted Toleware Storage Box with Grapes, 1951 15.4"

A striking vintage toleware storage box decorated with clusters of dark grapes and softly faded gold vine leaves. Painted in layered shades of blue-green, burgundy and red, the metal surface has developed extensive wear, oxidation and fading, creating a richly aged decorative finish.

The substantial oval container retains its fitted lid, broad carrying handle, side fittings and front fastening handles. Painted grapes and vine leaves continue around the body and across the lid, while the interior is finished in a contrasting deep red. Its generous proportions make it an unusual decorative storage piece for a kitchen, pantry, wine room or collected interior, whether displayed on a table, placed beneath a console or used to hold household items.

The box is stamped FF&S, dated 1951, and bears British War Department markings. Originally manufactured by F. Francis & Sons as a military catering or provisions container, it was later decoratively painted with grapes and vine leaves. Its sturdy utilitarian construction remains part of its character, although its appeal today lies in the unusual oval form, richly aged colour and decorative botanical surface.
