Carefully sourced in France: One of a kind piece

A beautiful French antique ceramic water jug or gargoulette from the South of France, dating to the late 19th century.

This French antique gargoulette is formed in terracotta and finished with a flowing green and yellow glaze. The rounded body rises to a wide opening, with a gently angled pouring spout and a curved top handle, paired with a smaller side handle. The glaze has been applied freely, creating vertical trails of green and yellow over warm brown.

Traditionally used for storing and cooling water, gargoulettes are a familiar form in the South of France, where the porous clay allowed evaporation to keep contents fresh. Today, they work just as well as decorative pieces, bringing warmth and colour to a shelf, table or kitchen setting.

This example dates to the late 19th century and shows the irregularities of hand-thrown pottery, with subtle variations in shape and glaze.

A characterful piece that sits comfortably alongside other rustic ceramics or as a standalone example of French country charm.
