An evocative early 20th-century French artist’s oil paint box, complete with its wooden palette and a wonderfully preserved assortment of studio contents. The fitted wooden case contains old oil paint tubes, brushes, bottles and metal containers, with layers of dried pigment throughout showing its long history as a working painter’s box.

The large removable wooden palette is particularly striking, its surface built up with years of dried oil colour in greens, blues, ochres, reds and creams. Paint marks also remain throughout the interior of the box, giving the piece the character of a genuine working artist’s studio rather than simply a decorative case.

The front bears the circular stamp of Manufacture Française d’Armes et Cycles, Saint-Étienne, better known as Manufrance, the celebrated French manufacturer and mail-order company. Manufrance offered an extraordinarily wide range of goods during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including artists’ materials and painting equipment.

Constructed in wood with dovetailed corners, a carrying handle, metal fittings and a fitted compartmented interior, the box retains an appealing combination of practical craftsmanship and accumulated studio wear. Displayed open with the palette and paints visible, it makes a particularly decorative piece for an artist’s studio, library, cabinet of curiosities or an interior layered with antique and vintage objects.
