A striking pair of French mid-century gilt metal wheat sheaf wall lights, dating to around the 1960s. Each two-arm wall sconce is worked in gilt metal with three sculptural ears of wheat rising above long folded leaves, scrolling candle branches and leaf-shaped candle cups.

The wheat sheaf motif gives the pair a strong decorative presence, with the pressed and curved metalwork creating depth and movement across the leaves and wheat heads. A scalloped circular backplate completes the layered botanical design.

The sculptural wheat-sheaf design is closely associated with the decorative gilt-metal lighting of Hans Kögl and other European makers working during the mid-20th century. Although these lights are unmarked and we do not attribute them to a particular maker, they belong firmly to this distinctive tradition of botanical mid-century lighting.

Their softly aged gilt finish gives the metal a warm, mellow character, complemented by the original-style faux-wax candle sleeves. Elegant without feeling overly formal, they would work beautifully placed either side of a mirror, painting, doorway or chimney breast.

A decorative pair for mid-century, Hollywood Regency and eclectic interiors, combining sculptural form with the warmth of aged gilt metal.

Condition: In good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. There is variation and wear to the gilt finish, with areas of oxidation and some verdigris, more pronounced on one light. The faux-wax candle sleeves show age-related marks and wear. Please refer closely to the photographs. The existing electrical wiring is old and the lights are sold requiring rewiring before installation or use.
