A striking French Napoleon III fireplace fender in cast brass, dating from the second half of the 19th century. Richly decorated with opposing lions, scrolling acanthus foliage, mask motifs, shells and a central rocaille cartouche, the piece retains its iron structural supports to the reverse.
Each end is formed as a tall ornamental upright rising above scrolling acanthus work, with finely modelled lion figures standing prominently to either side. The uprights are further decorated with expressive mask motifs, shells and classical ornament, while the pierced central rail is finished with a substantial rocaille-style cartouche. The combination of lions, scrolling foliage and architectural detailing gives the piece a particularly impressive presence.
The brass has developed a beautifully varied surface over time, with areas of warm golden colour alongside darker oxidation and wear that accentuate the depth of the casting. The reverse retains its iron structural supports, giving an interesting view of the traditional construction.
Designed to sit across the front of a fireplace, this antique French fireplace fender works particularly well in a period interior, grand country house setting or as a decorative architectural feature in a more contemporary room. Its scale is substantial enough to make an impact without overwhelming a standard fireplace opening.
