Carefully sourced in France: One of a kind piece

An early 19th century French antique terracotta pot, known as a ponne (salting pot), sourced in the Bordeaux region and likely Charentais in origin.

Traditionally used for preserving meat in salt or brine, these broad clay vessels were an essential part of rural domestic life across South West France. Their generous rounded form and thick rolled rim were designed for durability, often covered with cloth or parchment and kept cool in a pantry or cellar.

This clay salting pot stands at 38 cm / 14.9" high and 32 cm / 12.6" wide. It has a particularly sculptural form, with a rounded body rising to a thick rolled rim and a simple incised band beneath the shoulder. The surface has developed a beautifully weathered patina over time, with areas of natural wear.

The interior of this earthenware jar partially retains its original green glaze, while the exterior has developed a soft, timeworn surface with natural tonal variation. At some point in its life, drainage holes were added to the base so that it could be repurposed as a planter, a common and practical adaptation that allows it to continue functioning beautifully today.

Now, this terracotta vessel makes a striking architectural statement indoors or out. It is equally at home beside a fireplace, in a hallway, or planted with a small olive or citrus tree.
