Carefully sourced in France: One of a kind piece

A beautiful French antique terracotta pitcher or ceramic cruche with a warm orange glaze, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.

Traditionally used throughout southern France as a water pitcher, these vessels were part of everyday life in rural kitchens. The rounded body and gently shaped pouring lip were designed for practical use, while the single handle allowed for easy carrying and serving.

This example features a rich orange glaze across the upper body, with subtle variations in tone and texture from the firing process. The glaze stops above the base, revealing the natural terracotta beneath, a typical feature of utilitarian French pottery.

The softly irregular form, particularly around the spout, reflects its handmade nature and adds to its character. Signs of age and use are present, most notably around the base and rim, contributing to the authenticity of the piece.

Likely originating from southern France, in regions such as Provence or Languedoc, the cruche now makes a striking decorative object for the kitchen or interior, equally beautiful displayed on open shelving or filled with dried flowers or branches.
