A striking vintage Spanish pottery plate by Puigdemont of La Bisbal d’Empordà, Catalonia, dating to around 1960. Hand decorated with two expressive fish, the plate combines rich yellow, olive green, blue and earthy brown glazes against a softly creamy ground.
The freely painted decoration is particularly characteristic of mid-century Mediterranean ceramics, with incised detailing adding texture to the fins and bodies of the fish. Green brushwork around the border and loosely painted aquatic foliage give the piece a wonderfully graphic quality.
The plate is made from terracotta and glazed on both sides, with a warm reddish-brown glaze to the reverse contrasting with the lighter, more colourful decoration to the front. It is signed Puigdemont to the reverse, identifying it with the well-known pottery workshop of La Bisbal, one of Catalonia’s historic centres of ceramic production.
A very decorative example of mid-century Catalan pottery, it would work particularly well displayed on a wall, propped on a shelf or incorporated into a collection of Mediterranean and European ceramics.
