Carefully sourced in France: One of a kind piece

A beautiful French antique ceramic water jug or gargoulette from Provence, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.

These traditional Provençal pottery vessels were used throughout the south of France to keep drinking water naturally cool. The porous clay body allowed a small amount of evaporation through the surface of the pot, gently cooling the water stored inside.

This example features a warm yellow glaze across the upper body with splashes of green running from the neck and handle. The lower portion remains largely unglazed, revealing the pale clay typical of southern French utilitarian pottery.

The jug has the classic gargoulette form with a tall central handle and small pouring spout, designed for easy carrying and serving. With its sculptural shape and time-worn surface, it now makes a beautiful decorative piece for a kitchen or interior, equally striking displayed on a shelf or filled with dried flowers or branches.
