Dating from the 19th century, this wonderfully weathered French terracotta pot has a beautifully rounded form, substantial loop handles and remnants of its original green glaze.
The exterior surface has worn over time, leaving a softly textured surface in warm cream, ochre and earthy tones, with flashes of green glaze still visible around the rim and across the body. Inside, considerably more of the deep green glaze remains, creating a striking contrast with the pale, timeworn exterior.
Probably originating from South-West France, pots of this type were made as practical household vessels for storing and preserving food. Today, its generous shape and exceptional surface make it a particularly decorative piece, perfect displayed simply on a table or console, or filled with dried flowers or branches.
There is extensive wear and loss to the original glaze, together with surface marks, deposits and irregularities consistent with its age and utilitarian history. These have given the pot the wonderfully weathered character seen in the photographs.
