Antique French Earthenware Pitcher with Wide Flared Rim

Antique French Earthenware Pitcher with Wide Flared Rim

Lage voorraad: nog maar 1

An unusual antique French earthenware pitcher dating to the early 20th century, with a distinctive wide, flared rim, gently shaped pouring spout and single curved handle.

Traditionally used in French cheesemaking, this type of pottery jug was designed to hold a faisselle, a perforated mould used for draining fresh cheese. The faisselle would rest over the wide opening, allowing the whey to collect in the vessel beneath before being poured away.

The earthenware has developed a beautiful, weathered surface in muted shades of reddish-brown, soft terracotta and dusty grey. Natural variations in the clay, subtle marks from its making and a gently worn surface give this piece plenty of character. The generous flared opening contrasts with the rounded body below, creating a particularly striking silhouette.

A lovely example of traditional French country pottery, perfect for displaying on an open kitchen shelf, rustic table or amongst a collection of antique earthenware.
