A striking vintage Spanish ceramic wall plate, attributed to the Puigdemont workshop of La Bisbal d’Empordà, Catalonia, and dating to around the 1960s.
Made from substantial red earthenware, the plate has a wonderfully atmospheric blue-grey glazed ground decorated with a large stylised fish in shades of green, yellow and blue. Incised detailing defines the scales, fins and features of the fish, while seaweed, a small starfish and scattered bubbles complete the underwater composition. Variations within the glaze and the expressive, hand-worked decoration give the piece the distinctive character associated with mid-century pottery from La Bisbal.
Although unsigned, the plate is attributed to Puigdemont on the basis of its form, red clay body, glaze palette, incised decoration and marine subject matter, all of which closely correspond with documented Puigdemont production. It was also acquired alongside a signed Puigdemont fish plate, further supporting the attribution.
The reverse is glazed and retains its wire for wall hanging. At 27.5cm in diameter and weighing approximately 1kg, it is a particularly substantial piece with plenty of decorative presence.
A characterful example of mid-century Spanish studio pottery, ideal displayed on a wall either individually or as part of a collection of vintage Mediterranean ceramics.
