Set of Three French Antique Gilt Metal Curtain Holdbacks with Female Masks, 19th Century

A striking set of three French antique gilt metal curtain holdbacks, each finished with a sculptural classical female mask framed by a fan-shaped surround. Dating to the late 19th century, they have long curved arms and ornate wall plates with scrolling decoration, giving them a particularly architectural quality when mounted.

The faces are beautifully modelled, with flowing hair and softly classical features, while the surviving gilded finish has developed a rich, aged surface with areas of darker patination and wear. Their generous scale makes them considerably more decorative than typical curtain hardware, and the unusual set of three would work particularly well across a group of windows, around French doors, or as decorative architectural pieces in their own right.

The construction appears to combine gilt cast metal with brass-toned arms and iron fittings to the reverse. The original mounting elements remain in place.
