Mid-Century Articulated Wooden Mannequin Arm, c.1950s–1960s

A striking mid-century articulated wooden mannequin arm, dating from approximately the 1950s–1960s. Originally made as part of a full-size display mannequin, the arm is constructed from turned and carved wood with articulated joints at the elbow, wrist and fingers, allowing it to be arranged in a variety of expressive positions.

The hand is particularly characterful, with individually jointed wooden fingers and a wonderfully worn surface developed through years of handling and use. The warm brown finish has softened and darkened unevenly across the wood, with rubbing around the joints and areas of lighter wear that give the piece considerable depth and character. Metal components remain visible within the elbow mechanism, while the upper arm retains its sprung shoulder fitting for attachment to the original mannequin body.

Now separated from the figure it was originally made for, the arm has become an unusual sculptural object in its own right. Its elongated proportions, articulated hand and exposed mechanical details give it a distinctly surreal quality, making it perfect for displaying on a console, desk, bookshelf or amongst a collection of antique and vintage objects.
