This large French vintage ceramic colander bowl features a softly blended green glaze with warm yellow undertones and a naturally worn rim that reveals the terracotta beneath.
Originally made for use in the kitchen, this type of bowl was used for rinsing and draining fruit, vegetables or cheese. The pierced holes, raised foot and wide, open form reflect its practical purpose, while the hand-thrown shape gives it character.
The glaze moves gently across the surface, creating variation in tone and depth, and the signs of use give it a beautiful patina. The unglazed underside shows the warmth of the clay, contrasting with the soft glaze above.
Today, it works just as well as a decorative piece. Its generous size gives it presence on a table or shelf, hung on a wall or it can be used as a fruit bowl or simply left empty to highlight its form and texture.
