A wonderfully large antique French tian bowl dating from the early 20th century, with a deep olive-green glazed interior and contrasting unglazed terracotta exterior.

The broad, gently flared form is characteristic of traditional French utilitarian pottery, originally made as a practical household vessel. Inside, the rich green glaze varies beautifully from dark olive to softer mossy tones, with areas of pooling, surface variation and wear developed through years of use. The exterior has been left unglazed, revealing the warm earthy colour and texture of the terracotta beneath.

There is considerable wear around the rim, including chips and losses, together with marks, surface wear and irregularities consistent with its age and handmade character. These signs of use give the bowl a particularly appealing, rustic appearance.

At 43.5 cm across, this is an impressive piece with plenty of presence. It would make a striking decorative bowl on a large kitchen table, console or dresser, either displayed simply on its own or filled with seasonal fruit or foliage.
