A beautifully ornate French Napoleon III gilt metal wall mirror, dating to the second half of the 19th century. Its elaborate openwork frame features sweeping acanthus leaves, scrolling foliage and two wonderfully sculpted faces, creating a striking decorative piece.
At the top of the mirror sits a classical female face crowned with foliage, while a grotesque mask decorates the lower section. The intricate gilt metalwork surrounds a rectangular bevelled mirror, with a finely detailed inner border that complements the more elaborate outer frame.
The bevelled glass displays attractive signs of age, including areas of deterioration to the silvering, particularly along the lower edge. The gilt metal frame also shows some age-related wear and variations to the finish. The reverse has a metal backing plate and a fitting for wall hanging.
With its rich golden finish and sculptural decoration, this antique French mirror would make a beautiful addition to a hallway, bedroom or living room, either displayed individually or incorporated into a collection of antique wall decorations.
