A decorative pair of late 19th-century French gilt brass andirons, or chenets, designed in the elaborate Louis XV Rococo style. Each features an openwork arrangement of sweeping rocaille scrolls, acanthus leaves and shell-like ornament, rising to a shaped cartouche and flame finial.

The two andirons form an opposing pair, with subtly mirrored decoration that creates a particularly striking display when placed together. Their aged gilt surface has developed a wonderfully varied finish, with areas of warm brass, darker patination and traces of verdigris highlighting the depth of the casting.

Their shorter backs make them ideal to display on a shelf or mantel, as well as a hearth.
