A large antique French stoneware jug, or cruche, dating from the 19th century, with a wonderfully varied glaze in warm shades of ochre, russet, amber and brown. The substantial hand-thrown body has a tall ovoid form, with a simple pouring lip and a strong applied handle rising from the shoulder.
The glaze is particularly attractive, changing considerably as the cruche is turned. Areas of rich reddish brown sit alongside golden ochre and darker speckled tones, while sections of the pale stoneware remain exposed around the neck and across parts of the body. Glaze runs, firing marks and subtle variations across the surface give the piece the character associated with traditional French utilitarian stoneware.
Originally made as a practical household vessel, this large French cruche now makes a striking decorative piece for a kitchen, dining room or French country interior. Its generous scale and sculptural form allow it to stand beautifully on its own, filled with branches or displayed alongside a collection of antique French pottery.
