Carefully sourced in France: One of a kind piece

A wonderfully weathered 19th-century French confit pot, traditionally used in the South-West of France for storing preserved foods and fats. Hand-thrown from earthenware, it has a softly tapered form with two applied handles and retains extensive areas of its original mustard-yellow glaze around the upper half and interior.

Years of use have left the surface beautifully worn, with areas of glaze loss revealing the pale, textured clay beneath. Particularly appealing are the irregular trails of glaze running down the otherwise unglazed lower body, together with the crazing, firing variations and softened edges that give the pot its distinctive character.

At some point in its long life, a drainage hole was added through the base, suggesting that the pot was later repurposed as a planter. Today it would make a striking decorative piece in a French country interior, either displayed on its own or used once again for planting.
