A striking French antique bénitier crucifix in painted plaster, combining a traditional wall cross with an integrated holy water font.
The form is particularly expressive, with Christ set against a radiating, sunburst-like backdrop, framed by softly modelled foliage. Below, the font projects forward in a rounded bowl, giving the piece a sculptural depth when hung on the wall.
The surface shows a beautifully worn painted finish, with layers of dark and pale tones softened over time. Areas of paint loss reveal the plaster beneath, adding contrast and texture across the figure and the basin. This wear gives the piece a strong presence, especially when set against a plain wall.
Originally intended for devotional use, bénitiers like this were often placed near a doorway. Today, it works just as well as a decorative wall piece, bringing a sense of history and depth to an interior.
