An exceptionally decorative antique tramp art box, intricately constructed from layer upon layer of notched and chip-carved wood. Dating to around the turn of the 20th century, this unusual folk art box resembles a miniature piece of architectural furniture, with stepped borders, projecting corners and densely worked geometric decoration.
The hinged lid opens to reveal a single aged rectangular mirror fitted to its inner face and a vivid red fabric-lined storage compartment. A raised fabric-covered pincushion is incorporated into the top, suggesting that the box was originally made as a sewing or work box. It could now also be used as an unusual jewellery box or displayed as a decorative object on a dressing table, chest of drawers or cabinet.
Rich burgundy, olive green and faded cream velvet panels soften the heavily carved wooden construction. They are framed with delicate gilt metal decoration, painted roses and small coloured glass details. A single lion-mask ring handle is mounted on the burgundy front panel. Due to its small size, this is primarily a decorative feature rather than a functional carrying handle.
The complexity of the layered construction makes this a particularly striking example of antique tramp art. Its strong colours, aged mirror and theatrical combination of carved wood, velvet and gilt embellishment create considerable decorative interest, whether displayed open or closed.

Condition: There is wear consistent with age and use, including losses and breaks to areas of the projecting chip-carved decoration, rubbing and fading to the velvet, marks and dust to the fabric lining, and spotting to the mirror.
