Collection of antique copper ferrats from the Auvergne region of France, displayed in a still life, with fruit, nuts and foliage. The copper vessels are being used as champagne and wine coolers.

The History of Antique Copper Ferrats

Copper ferrats, recognisable by their two handles, originate from the Auvergne region of France. They have a dip in the bottom which was used to carry the vessel on the head or hip, using the two sturdy handles to keep steady.

These pieces, once serving a utilitarian purpose in a mountainous region of central France, can be repurposed today. They could be used as a champagne cooler, taking an impressive space on a dining table. Another way to use the ferrats is to hold logs by a fireplace, the warm copper adding to the cosy ambiance of a room.
